You’ve probably heard about all you can drink brunches, but an all you can drink dinner?!

Welcome to Piola in Union Square, a large Italian eatery where on Wednesday nights ladies can have unlimited house wine (red or white) with any entrée after 8pm. As you can imagine it’s full of groups…

I’m going to simply say that I really enjoy this, and kind of can’t believe I didn’t notice it being that I work down the street. I would’ve said something encouraging like “we’re all people,” then walked away a little embarrassed. I don’t like public speaking.

A very cool project at Union Square by Improv Everywhere. This podium was brought there by the group and just left there with a little sign to “say something nice.” The result is just great.

eceoncu:

I was walking around Union Square and I found this sitting on the main area of the square. HBO was promoting Game of Thrones with a street team. You can actually sit on the throne and the photographer will take a photo of you. Then, you have the option of e-mailing the photo to yourself, sending it to Twitter and Facebook. All the photos taken are also featured in HBO’s Game of Thrones Facebook page. Tune in to HBO to watch the series starting on April 17th! And if you can, read the first book, A Game of Thrones before the premiere.

A man on a bench in front of a statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Union Square, July 2010.
This bronze sculpture of Mahatma Gandhi by Kantilal B. Patel was installed on a traffic island on the southwest corner of Union Square Park in 1986, the 117th anniversary of Gandhi’s birth, one year after a major renovation of the park. A reminder of his calmness and resolve in the face of adversity is perfect for one of the busiest areas in New York City.
The monument, donated by the Gandhi Memorial International Foundation and underwritten by Mohan B. Murjani of Murjani International, Ltd., was installed at Union Square because of the tradition of protest associated with the park. After its installation the monument became an instant pilgrimage site, with an annual ceremony taking place on Gandhi’s birthday, October 2.

Statue of Art Icon Andy Warhol Unveiled in Union Square
By Amy Zimmer

MANHATTAN — It’s easy to pass by the Decker Building at 33 Union Square West without knowing its historical significance in the world of Pop Art.
There’s no sign or tribute explaining that Andy Warhol set up his “Factory” there, the hip home to his superstars where the famous artist set up an assembly line in 1968 to make his silkscreens, print his magazines and do his screen tests. That will soon change.
Warhol, who worked in the Union Square area until 1984 and passed away in 1987, is returning to the area once again.
A nearly 10-foot-tall sculpture of Warhol by Rob Pruitt will be on view in the pedestrian plaza at 17th Street through Oct. 2. It’s  just outside the building where Warhol had his “Factory” for more than a decade after he moved from the Decker Building and close to the spot where he was shot by Valerie Solanas in 1968.

“It stands on the street corner, just as Warhol did when he signed and gave away copies of Interview magazine,” Nicholas Baume, director and chief curator of the Public Art Fund, wrote on the fund’s website. “It depicts Warhol as a ghostly, silver presence: a potent cultural force as both artist and self-created myth.”
The chrome statue, commissioned by the Public Art Fund, was created using digital scanning of a live model and hand sculpting. It wears Warhol’s signature white “fright wig” and carries a Polaroid camera around its neck. Pruitt placed a Medium Brown Bag in Warhol’s right hand and imagines it’s filled with copies of Interview magazine, the publication the pop culture icon founded up the street in 1969.
“Like so many other artists and performers and people who don’t fit in because they’re gay or otherwise different, Andy moved here to become who he was, to fulfill his dreams and make it big,” said Pruitt, according to the Public Art fund. “He still represents that courage and that possibility. That’s why I came to New York, and that’s what my Andy Monument is about.”
Warhol left Pittsburgh for New York. Pittsburgh, however, built a museum in his honor. In New York, he is joining the ranks of George Washington and Mahatma Gandhi in Union Square.
